Traits of Successful Relationships

A successful relationship is the Holy Grail in life for most people. We are constantly searching and striving to attain that bond with someone without fully understanding the components involved in making it happen. In a time of serial monogamy, marriage drive thrus, and quickie divorces, we don't have much incentive to invest that sort of time. Relationships are easy to get out of. But in order to have a successful relationship, both parties must first actively communicate their intentions of what they are hoping to gain from the relationship, concerns, and hopes for themselves as individuals and as a collective.Failure to do this would surely be the demise of any relationship. During life, a significant factor is the relationship with another. There are many aspects to a relationship that will make it strong or long lasting. Looks may seem to be important but in the long run they prove not to be. Looks can be changed through surgery and can fade with age. There are four qualities t hat should be found in a good strong relationship. These four factors will never change no matter what kind of relationship one is in or what one looks like. The four factors that make a good relationship are commitment, trust, caring, and communication.In any relationship, if any of these four factors are missing then the relationship will not last long. Commitment is an important factor in building a strong and successful relationship. Commitment keeps a relationship together through the good and the bad times. Whether a partner in a relationship is suffering through hard times, the couple if committed will pull through. A strong relationship that is committed will make it through the major and the minor crisis of life. A minor crisis that could put a strain on a relationship could be considered as something simple such as the breaking of a date or one person having no money.A major crisis may be one partner going off to war or having to leave town for several months on business. If the relationship is committed then a couple will survive these crises. Commitment is a step in building a strong relationship. (Naidu, 1996) The second part of a successful relationship is trust. Trust is like the â€Å"I love you† of a relationship. Trust means that when one partner wants to go out for a night on the town with his or her friends that they will not cheat. When a couple is out together for a night, the partner will not be flirting with other people in the room.A couple that trusts each other will give each other space to do their own thing. Trust allows a relationship to grow because there is not the constant worry of what the other party is doing. Trust is when there are selected responsibilities that each partner may have and makes sure are fulfilled. Responsibilities such as making sure the trash is taken out or the bills are paid on time. Building trust in a relationship could even consist of making sure that if there is a dinner date that both parties are on time. Even though destroying trust can happen in an instant, building trust takes lots of time. Gildea, 2005) Building trust in a relationship takes time and effort while destroying it could be as simple as cheating or not showing up when a date is scheduled. The third part of a successful relationship is caring. There is no way to truly describe what caring is but it is an intimate part of any relationship. Caring is a feeling or emotion that cannot be readily described in words but still a feeling. Caring is missing your partner when they are away or being sad when they are not feeling well. Caring in a relationship is an emotion that can only be described using other emotions.When two people care for each other in a relationship they form a bond which is hard to break even when common sense tells them that they need to. This bond is so strong that even abusive couples will stay together. The couple thinks that they care for each other enough that the abuse does not matter. (Jaroneczyk, 2002) Caring is the fabric of building a strong relationship. The fourth and most important part of a relationship is communication. Communications is the problem solver of a relationship and could also be the destroyer of a relationship. Communication is the foundation of every relationship.Whether it is a relationship between a man and a woman or a relationship between people of the same gender, communication is the best way and maybe the only way for people to express their feelings to their partner. When a good communication system does not exist, the relationship could no longer exist either because the two sides do not understand each other anymore. Communication keeps the both sides inform about everything. Even though communication is very vital, it is very hard to accomplish a lot of times. It is even harder for a man and a woman to establish a good communication due to the differences of the two genders.As stated by Deborah Tannen in her article â€Å"Sex, L ies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other? † men and women, when it comes to communication, they are very different from each other. Each gender looks at the subject from a whole different point of view. For the male, they don't like to do much of talking but more of hanging out together. Going to a bar or watching a sport game is their way of good bonding and communication. As for women, they like to have long chats and that is their way of good communication.Like Tannen said, â€Å"Intimacy is the fabric of relationships, and talk is the thread from which it is woven (Tannen, 1995, 33). † Therefore, the two sides look for different things when it comes to communication in a relationship. This is one of the main reasons why it is easier for two people of the same gender to communicate than opposite sex. When a man is down, he comes to his best male friend and tells the problem, the friend probably will not be so sensitive about it but instead might try to argue it, showing the male hierarchy and they start to have a debate. For a woman, it is very different.Women try to understand each other and put themselves into the position and try to feel it with one another (Tannen, 1995, 33-34). The natural development of men and women also plays a very important role in creating a hard communication between the two genders. Throughout history, men always had been the more dominant gender. A male is always expected to support and run his family externally. On the other hand, a female's role in society is to take care of the kitchen and the children. A female in history was always expected to wait and stay by the side of a man and never would get the same opportunities or treatment.Even though this concept had improved over the years with hard works of many courageous women, it is still a problem today. In her essay â€Å"Unfair Game,† Susan Jacoby displays how disrespectful men can be to women. According to Jaco by, men always think that women are out hunting for men. Jacoby shares several of her personal experiences to prove her point. One of the incidents is when she and a friend were having a conversation at a bar and a drunken man tried to hit on them. They outwardly refuse and the man was very amazed at their rejection.These types of incidents are typical in today's society but morally very wrong. Society always has pictured women as the lower and less important gender. So therefore, with this idea in mind, women get less respect and get treated as though they are useless and always have to go out in search for men to survive. In the society today, some men take this concept and go a step further. They expect to get what they want and if not, they call the women bad names like it happens to Jacoby (Jacoby, 207-208). Communication is the first and most important thing in a relationship but it is also the hardest thing to accomplish.A bad communication in a relationship could cause many misunderstandings and troubles. If good communication is easily attain, than the United States would not have nearly 50 percent divorce rate (Tannen, 1995, 32). It is very hard to achieve, but fighting will not solve anything, only compromises will solve problems. But ultimately the reason communication is most important is because it’s the beginning of any relationship. Every relationship starts with communication because that is how you meet the person. A relationship will not get started if the communication is not there.Communication separates a purely physical relationship with no meaning from a true strong relationship. Communication in a relationship should be honest. Communication makes two people one. (Jaroneczyk, 2002) When a couple knows each others likes and dislikes communication is strong. Communication lets a couple talk about their problems and can help resolve many of them. In a relationship with no communication a small problem can cause a rift which will le ad to a break up. This is why communication is an important part of a relationship. In all relationships there are up and downs.There are likes and dislikes in any relationship but there are four elements that keep them together. A couple that has strong communication is more likely to stay together then one that does not. A relationship with caring will be stronger than a relationship without. A couple that trusts one another is a likely pair to stay together. Finally a couple that has a strong commitment is more likely to have a good relationship. Character Analysis of Florante and Laura Essay

I. Florante at Laura Florante and Laura are the main characters of the great metrical romance of arguably the greatest Filipino poet, Francisco Balagtas. Florante is the son of Duke Briseo and Princess Floresca of Albania and the main protagonist of the romance. Laura is the daughter of King Linceo of Albania and the love interest of Florante and is later married to him. This is a package deal, because they can’t stand alone on their own for their cultural meaning stems from them being together, as they symbolize love overcoming extreme difficulties, even the great divide of culture, family and religion. The relationship between Florante and Laura is so divine and special because their love for each other proved that love conquers all. Their love for each mother must set a standard to all of us that we should fight for the one we love and cherish the most. In the story, even if there were so many obstacles and problems that came into their lives they still manage to maintain what they have for each other. It should be an example to all of us of how real love is. II. Comparison or Parallelism Local: Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara are the two protagonists in Jose Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tangere. They share a love that even distance can’t break. Just like the happenings between Florante and Laura. They’ve been separated or away from each other for some days, weeks, months or even years but their love stay. Another similarity is the love triangle present in both stories. In Florante and Laura, there is Adolfo who wants to destroy the love between the lovers to get Laura. In Noli Me Tangere, there is Linares who wants to marry Maria Clara. Even if there’s someone who tried to ruin their love they still remain faithful to each other. One of the best similarities of them is  that they are willing to die just to protect each other. Crisostomo is ready to fight the Spaniards or even the priests to set Maria Clara free but unfortunately Maria Clara died inside the convent and Crisostomo was left with revenge and guilt in his heart. On the other hand, Florante fight his enemies even if it means that it’ll cost his life. Good thing Florante manage to stay alive. Foreign: Romeo and Juliet The very famous Romeo and Juliet can be compared to our very own Florante and Laura because of the flow of their story and most significantly its theme. The theme is the difference of their culture and family. The Montagues and the Capulets are very nice enemies so if someone established an intimate relationship with one another it’s a sin. In Florante and Laura, there’s a conflict between cultures and because of that their families became nice enemies also. Same as Crisostomo Ibarra and Florante, Romeo has a competitor also for the hands and heart of Juliet, his name is Paris. Paris is the suitor of Juliet and the Capulets want Paris to be Juliet’s husband but we all know that Romeo is the one for Juliet. This shows that if you really love the person you will not be attracted to another person even if he do good to you or even if your family wants him for you. You should follow your heart if it is what makes you happy, you should fight for it even if it means that you will have a battle and war between people. The good thing that happens in the end of both stories is of course when their families finally have peace. This happened on Romeo and Juliet when both families realize that it’s wrong to fight each other for a very long time if they should have resolved it from the very first time it occurs when Romeo and Juliet died together. In Florante and Laura peace was made when all of the fights were ended and their religions and culture became one. III. Conclusion The similarities on the characters are very obvious. They would do anything for love and they symbolize love as being able to overcome obstacles and problems in life. I’ve learned that love conquers all and if you really love someone you should not be ashamed to fight for it even if the things that you will encounter are as hard as a diamond. Time flies so fast you’ll never know what will happen so you must cherish and do everything you can do to make every moment lasts. I think another thing that I’ve learned is that you should not be fooled by prejudice because some conflicts are caused by that. But the main lesson of the stories and the characters is love is unconditional and sacrificial.

And until we do better, we apologize! †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ Mr. Will may well have been correct that many U. S. firms were not producing products up to the quality standards of many foreign firms. We want to point out, however, that his criticism of Buick’s boast of being number five as indicative of shoddy American quality may not have been quite valid. In fact, it may be great to be â€Å"Number Five†.

An Argument on Education Essay Abstract Education is important to have with today’s economy in the shape that it is in. However, there are different ways that people define education. Some people believe that to be considered well educated they need to have the top education in the United States, the highest GPA, and the highest standardized testing scores! I firmly believe that your knowledge first comes from the Lord and that he will bless you in whatever area he has for you! There are many examples that we can use to see both sides and not just judging someone as well educated only through grades ad excellence in school. An Argument on Education Education is important for everyone to have growing up if they want to make it by in today’s modern world. However, everyone seems to determine how well educated someone else is in a different ways such as: their test scores, papers that they write, their grade point average, and their knowledge of knowing how to do things. In Alfrie Kohn’s Article (2003), â€Å"What does it mean to be well –educated† he cites a quote from an Alred Whitehead stating, â€Å"A merely well-informed man is the most useless bore on God’s earth. . .  . Scraps of information† are only worth something if they are put to use, or at least â€Å"thrown into fresh combinations. † There are parts of this quote that I agree and disagree on. I agree with Alred saying that men on this earth that just have bits and pieces of information are useless unless it can relate to their job that gets them by. Acquiring knowledge isn’t a bad thing, its just not always needed. I only disagree because I believe that if someone does know a large amount that it is not pointless, it just should not determine whether or not they are educated or not. Throughout the years I have had the chance to be in school I have learned and observed much through my own personal experiences as well as being surrounded by my peers at school and at home. Personally, I am one of those students who can learn the material I am asked to learn but when it comes to taking tests I freeze up and get extremely anxious, which allows me to do poorly on the tests. I had extremely low SAT scores and low-test scores from any big test, but I was also an honor graduate and gradated in the top one hundred out of six hundred students. Many people would consider me uneducated just because of low standardized tests when they do not think of other factors that could reason for why I get low scores. High-test scores alone and high GPA’s cannot determine whether or not someone is well educated. At the beginning of Alfrie Kohn’s article he gives a superior example of this by telling us that his wife who went to Harvard and does not even know her math or English well. â€Å"She will, however, freeze up if you ask her what 8 times 7 is, because she never learned the multiplication table. And forget about grammar (â€Å"Me and him went over her house today† is fairly typical) or literature (â€Å"Who’s Faulkner? †). Harvard is known as One of the top prestigious school in America, and because of that most people would assume that who ever goes to that school is well educated. This is example is similar to how it is with anything but what people do not realize is some of the world’s well-educated people did not even graduate from high school. I believe that being well educated means being able to put what you know to use and being able to use that knowledge to glorify the one who created me. As a strong believer in Christ, I believe my relationship with God and spreading his word is more important than knowledge. However, that does not mean that I believe a person should be uneducated. I believe that if given the opportunity to learn we should not take it for granted and that we should bring glory to God through it. I just believe that at the end of your days that God does not care about what degree you have in your hand but he cares about how you lived your life for him. â€Å"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. 11 For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life† (Proverbs 9:10-11). Our good lord explains that education is first gained through God himself and that your purpose is to live solely for him. Gaining knowledge in Christ is the most important first and he will Bless you in every other area in your life that he feels you need. However, I do believe that getting a degree in something that God is calling you to do. For me, God is calling me to be a missionary Nurse overseas. I know in order to do that I have to get an education on how to be a Nurse in order to carryout God’s will for my life. Most people believe that you need to go to a good school to be considered well educated. I was going to a community college back at home and was learning much when people were questioning why I was going to a community college and that I could get a better education at a different college or university that was away from home. Alfrie Kohn’s wife attended Harvard and still did not know her multiplication tables and wasn’t good at grammar or literature. I believe this is a good example to my previous statement about how it shouldn’t matter what school you go to and that it should not determine how well educated he or she is just because of the title the school has. Everyone has his or her own view on what they believe is a well-educated person, but I feel as if not everyone looks at every viewpoint. They just go off what they know and what first comes to mind. Today because of the way our economy is set up people believe that the only way someone can be considered well educated is if they go to a college to further their degree. There are other ways that someone can get jobs such as enlisting in the military or even through taking over a family-owned business. Determining whether or not someone is educated through tests, and by what schools he or she attended is absurd. You can see that from taking a glance at the people in the world that are huge successes to back that statement up. If we determined whether or not someone was well educated by whether or not he or she graduated college than something is wrong. Deformation Effects: Energy Gap in LDA and GW Approximation Theoretical calculations and experimental measurements indicating the importance of many-body  effects in reduced dimensional systems. We performed ab initio calculations based on density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory in the GW approximation. To illustrate our  results, we consider a (8; 0) single wall carbon nanotube and by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation  calculate the macroscopic dielectric function à Ã‚ µ for both the undeformed and deformed nanotubes. The radial deformation is obtained by squeezing the nanotube in the y direction and elongating in  the x direction. Results show a decrease in band gap and a red shift in exciton transition energies  for nanotubes of elliptical cross-section. The deformation can be proposed as ideas for the achieve  to less excitonic energy. We implement the method in the ABINIT code for ground and excited  states calculations. Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are cylindrical structures that formed by rolling up a graphene  sheet. SWNCTs geometric structures describe by chiral  vector or positive integer pairs (n,m). Nanotubes with  (n,0) chirality is said to be of zigzag carbon nanotubes,  with (n,n) are armchair nanotubes and tubes with (n,m)  are chiral nanotubes. In the zone folding approximation if the difference   between these two integers (n,m) is an integer multiple  of 3, tubes are metal, otherwise, the tubes show semiconducting properties1. The observation and synthesis of single-walled  carbon nanotubes in recent years, making possible  the experimental study of the optical properties of  individual SWCNTs. Because of the nature of quasione-dimensional carbon nanotubes many-body effects  have an important in uence on their optical properties  and failure of single-particle theories not unexpected. The rst optical data for carbon nanotubes was  obtained in 1999 by Kataura2, which reports the transitions energies (Eii) as a function of the tube diameter  for nanotube with different chirality (n,m). A few years later with the precise spectroscopy3 showed  some deviations from the analysis of Kataura. In particular, the ratio (E22=E11), predicted to be equal  to 2 in the approximation where bands are linear close  to Fermi energy4 was found to be smaller3, and this  problem was not justi ed by single-particle theories, this  problem so-called ratio problem in SWCNTs5. Recent predictions based on rst principles calculations and semi-empirical approaches show the existence  of exciton with high binding energy in the carbon  nanotubes, so that the unknown effects observed in  the optical spectra of nanotubes can be attributed to  excitons and by considering the excitonic effects the  ratio probem would be solved. An evidence for the excitons in carbon nanotubes is  obtained in the theory6 and experiment3. A theoretical approach is the rst principles calculations of optical  spectra of carbon nanotubes, using the Bethe-Salpeter  equation. These calculations show exciton with large  binding energy in semiconductor nanotubes and even excitonic effects in metallic nanotubes6. In the present work, we obtain optical spectra with ab  initio calculations for Bethe-Salpeter equation for nanotubes of elliptical cross-section. To illustrate our results, we consider a (8,0) single wall  carbon nanotube, then in our model squeezing the nanotube in the y direction and elongating in the x direction,  we study quasiparticle band structures and excitation energies for nanotubes with elliptical cross-section. With  this model, the deformation effects on the exciton energies is investigated. However, so far the excitation energies are calculated  for nanotubes with elliptical cross-section, but this calculation is done with single-particle approach that regardless of the excitonic effects. Shan and Bao7 investigated the deformation effects on  the optical properties of carbon nanotubes based on  the tight-binding model and describe the deformation  of SWCNT under stretching, compression, torsion, and  bending, they were shown the shifting, merging, and  splitting of Van Hove Singularities in the DOS, and optical absorption properties variation with strains. We present a framework to predict the optical absorption of deformed SWNTs using the Bethe-Salpeter equation with many-body approach, so far this work has not  been done. The results can be employed to understand  and guide experimental studies of electronic and optoelectronic devices based on the CNTs. With density functional theory can be calculated  ground state energy and charge density for a many-body  interacting system. We obtain the DFT wave functions  and eigenvalues of (8,0) SWCNT by solving the Kohn-Sham equations8 within the local density approximation, with Teter Pade parametrization9 for the exchange correlation functional implemented in the ABINIT computational package10. The code uses a plan-wave basis set and a periodic supercell method. For all studied systems, we have used the ab initio normconserving Troullier-Martins pseudopotentials11 and (1140)  Monkhorst-Pack k-grid sampling of the Brillouin zone  was taken, for the self-consistent calculations with an energy cutoff 60 Ry. In the end of LDA calculations, we compare our LDA  calculations with results obtained using the QUANTUM  ESPRESSO12 package with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof  approximation and Ultrasoft pseudopotentials in a planewave basis. There is no difference between the two calculations for bandgap (8,0) carbon nanonotube13. Density functional theory is used to study the ground  state of the system and this theory cannot be used in  the prediction of excited states. In the investigation of  the excited states, the amount of band gap is greater  than that is observed with the LDA calculations. So beyond the DFT should use a theory that describes excitations correctly. Our approach is the many-body perturbation theory14 based on the concept of quasi-particles  and Greens function. In this theory, the quasi-particle  energies obtain by solving the following equation that  so-colled Dyson equation: Where T is the kinetic energy, Vext is the external potential, and VHartree is the average Hartree potential. is the self energy of the electrons and the indices refer to  Bloch states n, k, thus problem of nding quasi-particle  energies decreases to the problem of nding self-energy. A good approach that has been used extensively  for nding of self-energy is the GW approximation of  Hedin15. In the GW approximation, using the following  equation, self-energy (r; r†²;E) can be calculated: Here G is the Greens function of the electrons and  W = ..1v is the screened Coulomb interaction determined by the inverse dielectric matrix ..1(r; r;E) and  + is a positive in nitesimal time. Greens function is obtained with the Kohn-Sham wave  functions and eigenvalues: Since the wave functions are obtained with the LDA are  appropriate, a rst order approximation is sufficient to  correct the LDA energies, for this reason quasi-particle  energies derived from the rst-order perturbation theory  by the following equation: Where V LDA xc is the exchange-correlation potential and  Zn;k is the renormalization factor of the orbital de ned  as Zn;k = (1 à ´Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬ @[emailprotected])à ´Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬1j E=ELDA n;k . In the equation (2), sigma is a convolution of G and W,  this part of the calculation is very complex, because the  matrix à ´Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬1 GG†² (q; !) (in reciprocal space) must calculate for  all frequencies !, in direction of the real and imaginary  axis. Since only the value of the integral is important,  with a simple and acceptable model can calculate the  integrals. In this model the frequency dependence the  matrix à ´Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€š ¬1 GG†² (q; !) calculate with a plasmon pole model16: In this equation, ÃŽ ©2 GG†² (q) and ~!(q) are the parameters of  model, the nal values for the parameters in this model  is found in Ref. 16. Dielectric function in this model is  approximated as a single-peak structure, this peak placed  in the plasmon frequency !p. Plasmon pole model not  only reduces computation, but also makes an analytic  calculation of the relation (2). With the GW calculations, correction to the energy  gap of the carbon nanotube is obtained. The ABINIT  package has been used for the Hybertsen-Louie plasmon  pole model calculations. For all the GW calculations,  the energy cutoff is 36 Ry for the evaluation of the bare  Coulomb exchange contribution x, and 24 Ry for the  correlation part c. With the many-body perturbation theory, can be calculate the excitation energies with obtaining self-energy  using the GW approximation. In fact, an optical absorption will build a pair of bound electron-hole or exciton. For the calculation of excitation energies, a good agreement between experiment and theory to be achieved  when the interaction between the electron and hole are  also considered. BSE17 takes into account coupling between electron and hole and absorption spectra that obtained by solving this equation, is more consistent with  the experimental results. Bethe-Salpeter equation written for a bound two-body system, in condensed matter  this equation has the form of as follows: Where the quasiparticle energies Ec;Ev enter on the diagonal, and the indices v, c refers to the occupied valence  and empty conduction band states,Wand V are screened  and bare Coulomb potentials, respectively. By solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation, exciton energies are calculated. In order to have an observation for  the excitonic energies, the macroscopic dielectric function  is calculated using the following equation18: Where the Avc s is exciton amplitude and Es is exciton  energy. The relation between the imaginary part of à Ã‚ µM  to the frequency ! gives the absorption spectrum. In ABINIT, we use the option to evaluate the response  function recursively with Haydock algoritm19 and TammDancoff approximation14. Calculations of optical properties via BSE are more expensive computationally. For  both undeformed and deformed SWNTs, the BSE kernel,  in which the energy cutoff is 16 Ry for V and W. Fig. 3 shows the band structure for undeformed (8,0)  SWNT. According to the band structure, this SWNT is  a semiconductor and amount of band gap is 0:57 eV. We  repeat the same calculation for elliptical tubes, with the  previous parameters (the same cutoff energy, number  of kpoint, : : 🙂 and only the geometry of the tube will  change. Fig. 4 shows the band structure for deformed (8,0)  SWNTs with different values of . In this calculation,  the band gap decreases from Egap = 0:57 eV at = 1:0  to the closing point, Egap = 0:0 eV at = 0:7. the energy gap is 0:49 eV , 0:26 eV for A, B elliptic nanotubes,  respectively. For D, E and F, elliptic nanotubes no band  gap is found. In this calculation, A, B elliptic nanotubes remained  semiconductor and the C elliptic nanotube represents  the boundary of the metal. In this approximation D, E  and F, elliptic nanotubes are metal. By this calculation we show that when the deformation  is highly intense, the band gap decreases and one  insulator-metal transition occurs. In the second stage, we calculate correction band  gap energy and quasi-particle band structure with GW  approximation. Fig. 5 shows the quasiparticle band  structure for undeformed (8,0) SWNT, in the GW  approximation band gap is 1:76 eV that is greater than  the amount predicted in the LDA. Result for undeformed nanotube agrees well with  ab initio calculations presented in Ref. 6, that the  calculated value of the quasiparticle energy gap is given: 1:75 eV for undeformed (8,0) SWCNT. We perform  one-shot GW or G0W0 model where the convergence  studies have been carried out with respect to various  parameters (naumber of bands, cutoff energy, . . . ). In the previous stages, A, B elliptic nanotubes  remained semiconductor and the C elliptic nanotube  represents the boundary of the metal. We performed  GW calculations only for semiconducting nanotubes.   Fig. 6 shows the quasiparticle band structure and the  calculated value of the quasiparticle energy gaps that  they are 1:65 eV , 1:34 eV for A, B elliptic nanotubes,  respectively, and for the C elliptic nanotube no band  gap is found. For deformed nanotubes only the ground  state energy is calculated by many-body approach in  Ref. 20, so far no GW calculations have been done for  deformed nanotubes to compare our results with them. With the GW calculations, we conclude that when the  deformation is highly intense the band gap decreases,  too. We show the evolution of the energy band gap  (Egap) as a function of radial deformation in the Fig. 7,  where the band gap in LDA and GW calculations  represents for nanotubes with different values of the  deformation. The values of the contributions of LDA exchangecorrelation potential Vxc, the exchange x and the  correlation c part of the self energy are displayed in  Table I-Table IV. Results are for plasmon pole models,  in the Hybertsen-Louie approach presented in Ref. 16. We calculate the screened interaction W(! = 0)  be expressed in terms of the inverse dielectric matrix  ..1(r; r;E), which describes screening in a solid when  local elds due to density inhomogeneities and manybody effects are taken into account, to obtain self energy  by (2). However, we found gap correction for undeformed  and deformed nanotubes, but electron-hole interaction  decreased the excitation energy in these structures. The  calculations include the electron-hole interaction (excitonic effects) are closer and better values to experiment. In the third stage the macroscopic dielectric function  Ãƒ Ã‚ µM(!) has been calculated by (7) including local eld  effects with solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation.   In Fig. 8 A1 and B1 are peak for undeformed SWNT,  A2, B2 and A3, B3 are for A, B deformed SWNT,  respectively. The gure shows that with apply more deformation  A,B peaks shift to lower energy, and red shift occurs in  the optical spectra of carbon nanotubes. Therefor the  low energy exciton can be occurred by deformation on  the nanotubes. Table V shows the values of lowest two  optical transition energies for the undeformed SWCNT  in the present work and, ab initio calculations and  experiment. The value of ratio E11=E22 = 1:18 for the  (8,0) tube is in agreement with the experiment findings  of Bachilo et al3. Bachilo and coworks in their work  with Spectrouorimetric measurements obtained rst  and second transition energies for more than 30 semiconductor CNTs with different (n,m). their results shows  ratio equal to 1.17 for the (8, 0) nanotube and 1.85 for  nanotube with a diameter larger, while a single-particle  model, such as a tight bonding model is expected 2 value for this ratio. In considering excitonic effects the  ratio problem will be resolved and th ese calculations  give us better results. We rst obtains values of the  rst and second excitation energy for the undeformed  SWNT and were compared with computational and  exprimental values, then we repeated calculations for  deformed nanotubes to get results. Table VI shows  lowest two optical transition energies for the undeformed  and deformed SWNTs. The value of E11 and E22  decreases with deformation. In conclusion, we study the optical absorption  spectra of deformed and undeformed semiconducting   small-diameter SWCNT and survey the agreement with  available experimental data. We show by applying  deformation on the nanotubes one insulator-metal  transition occurs, and peaks shift to lower energy,  and red shift occurs in the optical spectra of carbon  nanotubes. The deformation can be proposed as ideas  for achieving to less excitonic energy. The results can  be employed to understand and guide experimental  studies of electronic and optoelectronic devices based  on the carbon nanotubes. So far GW calculations and  absorption spectra with excitonic effects for deformed  tubes has not been obtained. We investigate deformation effects on the energy gap  in LDA and GW approximation and optical spectra including excitonic effects. These calculations shows that  with apply deformation on the SWNT structure, energy  gap decrease, and lowest two optical transition energies  for the deformed SWNTs shift to lower energy. The deformation can be proposed as ideas for the achieve to less  excitonic energy. The results can be employed to understand and guide experimental studies of electronic and optoelectronic devices based on the carbon nanotubes. We compare our results with experimental data and  ab initio calculations for undeformed nanotube, then repeat calculations for deformed nanotubes and investigate  deformation effects on the energy gap in LDA and GW  approximation and optical spectra. Investigation of excitonic effects so far has not been done with many-body  approach for Bethe-salpeter equation for deformed nanotubes. Results are agreed with sing-particle calculations  that presented in Ref. 7.

An Analysis of Peter van Inwagen’s The Magnitude, Duration, and Distribution of Evil: a Theodicy In his essay, "The Magnitude, Duration, and Distribution of Evil: a Theodicy," Peter van Inwagen alleges a set of reasons that God may have for allowing evil to exist on earth. Inwagen proposes the following story – throughout which there is an implicit assumption that God is all-good (perfectly benevolent, omnipotent, and omniscient) and deserving of all our love. God created humans in his own likeness and fit for His love. In order to enable humans to return this love, He had to give them the ability to freely choose. That is, Inwagen holds that the ability to love implies free will. By giving humans free will, God was taking a risk. As Inwagen argues, not even an omnipotent being can ensure that "a creature who has a free choice between x and y choose x rather than y" (197)1. (X in Inwagen’s story is ‘to turn its love to God’ and y is ‘to turn its love away from God,’ towards itself or other things.) So it happened that humans did in fact rebel and turn away from God. The first instance of this turning away is referred to as "the Fall." The ruin of the Fall was inherited by all humans to follow and is the source of evil in the world. But God did not leave humans without hope. He has a plan "whose working will one day eventuate in the Atonement (at-one-ment) of His human creatures with Himself," or at least some of His human creatures (198). This plan somehow involves humans realizing the wretchedness of a world without God and turning to God for help. The telling of this story provokes many questions. Why didn’t God, being all-good and benevolent, "immediately restore His fallen creatures to their original union with... ... passage to suggest the essential role natural evils play in this story: "People who do not believe in God do not, of course, see our living to ourselves as a result of a prehistoric separation from God. But they can be aware – and it is a part of God’s plan of Atonement that they should be aware – that something is pretty wrong and that this wrongness is a consequence of the intrinsic inability of human beings to devise a manner of life that is anything but hideous" (203). Nowhere does experience prove this inability of human beings to escape the hideousness of the world more than in the case of natural disasters. They have existed as long as the human race, and though it may be possible for a person to delude him or herself into believing he or she is living a good life in a seemingly good world, no one can deny the horrible dangers that natural disasters present.

Gay and Lesbian Issues - The Nazi Extermination of Homosexuals The Holocaust is the greatest atrocity ever committed. Millions upon millions of people were ruthlessly tortured and executed during the infamous reign of the Third Reich. The events and conditions surrounding Adolf Hitler’s rise to power have been extensively studied by historians, sociologists, political scientists, and psychologists in the hopes of preventing this state of merciless dictatorship from ever recurring. Due to the immensity of the Nazi campaign against those of the Jewish faith, that ethnic group is most often mentioned in association with the concentration camps and exterminations of the Third Reich. However, there were many other groups who were persecuted alongside the Jews. These groups include political dissidents, criminals, gypsies, the handicapped, Jehovah’s Witnesses, emigrants, and homosexuals (Heger 32). The plight of homosexuals is, perhaps, the most overlooked aspect of the Holocaust. Of all the concentration camps, Sachsenhaussen, just nort h of Berlin, was the most important in the imprisonment and execution of homosexuals. The conditions under which all prisoners here were forced to live were absolutely inhuman, but for homosexuals it was far worse. As the one group that was despised by both the Nazis and those who were imprisoned within concentration camps, gays were persecuted with the greatest enthusiasm, and because of the taboos surrounding their lifestyle, their tragedy was left unnoticed for nearly three decades. The persecution of homosexuals at Sachsenhaussen was a natural outgrowth of the Nazi idea of the â€Å"master race† and was made possible by manipulation of German law. Homosexuals, according to Nazi propaganda, ... ...he testimonies of gay survivors from Sachsenhaussen are to teach us anything, it is that they, like the Jews and every other group exterminated by the Nazis, were victims. Their tragedy has been compounded by society’s rejection of their plight. In order to truly abolish the dangerous views of Nazism, we must first learn to accept all people as human beings, no matter what their national origin, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation may be. Table Tennis

Table Tennis Table tennis, also known as  ping-pong, is a  sport  in which two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth using  table tennis rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow a ball played toward them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. Points are scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions.A skilled player can impart several varieties of  spinto the ball, altering its trajectory and limiting an opponent's options to great advantage. Table tennis is governed by the worldwide organization  International Table Tennis Federation  (ITTF), founded in 1926. ITTF currently includes 217 member associations. The table tennis official rules are specified in the ITTF handbook. Since 1988, table tennis has been an  Olympic sport  with several event catego ries. In particular, from 1988 until 2004, these were: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles.Since 2008 a team event has been played instead of the doubles. In 2007, the governance for  table tennis for persons with a disability  was transferred from the  International Paralympic Committee  to the ITTF. History The game originated as a sport in England during the 1880s, where it was played among the upper-class as an after-dinner parlour game. It has been suggested that the game was first developed by British military officers in India or South Africa who brought it back with them.A row of books were stood up along the center of the table as a net, two more books served as rackets and were used to continuously hit a golf-ball from one end of the table to the other. Alternatively table tennis was played with paddles made of cigar box lids and balls made of champagne corks. The popularity of the game led game manufacturers to sell the equipment comm ercially. Early rackets were often pieces of parchment stretched upon a frame, and the sound generated in play gave the game its first nicknames of â€Å"wiff-waff† and â€Å"ping-pong†.A number of sources indicate that the game was first brought to the attention of Hamley's of Regent Street under the name â€Å"Gossima†. The name â€Å"ping-pong† was in wide use before British manufacturer J. Jaques & Son Ltd trademarked it in 1901. The name â€Å"ping-pong† then came to be used for the game played by the rather expensive Jaques's equipment, with other manufacturers calling it table tennis. A similar situation arose in the United States, where Jaques sold the rights to the â€Å"ping-pong† name to Parker Brothers.The next major innovation was by James W Gibb, a British enthusiast of table tennis, who discovered novelty celluloid balls on a trip to the US in 1901 and found them to be ideal for the game. This was followed by E. C. Goode who, in 1901, invented the modern version of the racket by fixing a sheet of pimpled, or stippled, rubber to the wooden blade. Table tennis was growing in popularity by 1901 to the extent that table tennis tournaments were being organized, books on table tennis were being written,[8] and an unofficial world championship was held in 1902.During the early 1900s, the game was banned in Russia because the rulers at the time believed that playing the game had an adverse effect on players' eyesight. In 1921, the Table Tennis Association was founded in Britain, and the International Table Tennis Federation followed in 1926. [5][10] London hosted the first official World Championships in 1926. In 1933, the United States Table Tennis Association, now called USA Table Tennis, was formed. In the 1950s, rackets that used a rubber sheet combined with an underlying sponge layer changed the game dramatically, introducing greater spin and speed.These were introduced to Britain by sports goods manufactur er S. W. Hancock Ltd. The use of speed glue increased the spin and speed even further, resulting in changes to the equipment to â€Å"slow the game down†. Table tennis was introduced as an Olympic sport at the Olympics in 1988. After the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the International Table Tennis Federation instituted several rules changes aimed at making table tennis more viable as a televised spectator sport. First, the older 38 mm balls were officially replaced by 40 mm balls in 2000.This increased the ball's air resistance and effectively slowed down the game. By that time, players had begun increasing the thickness of the fast sponge layer on their rackets, which made the game excessively fast and difficult to watch on television. Second, the ITTF changed from a 21-point to an 11-point scoring system in 2001. This was intended to make games more fast-paced and exciting. The ITTF also changed the rules on service to prevent a player from hiding the ball during service, in order to increase the average length of rallies and to reduce the server's advantage.Variants of the sport have recently emerged. â€Å"Large-ball† table tennis uses a 44 mm ball, which slows down the game significantly. This has seen some acceptance by players who have a hard time with the extreme spins and speeds of the 40 mm game. There is a move towards reviving the table tennis game that existed prior to the introduction of sponge rubber. â€Å"Hardbat† table tennis players reject the speed and spin of reversed sponge rubber, preferring the 1940–60s play style with no sponge and short-pimpled rubber. Defense is less difficult by decreasing the speed and eliminating any meaningful magnus effect of spin.Because hardbat killer shots are almost impossible to hit against a skilled player, hardbat matches focus on the strategic side of table tennis, requiring skillful maneuvering of the opponent before an attack can become successful. The choice of ball color is made according to the table color and its surroundings.For example, a white ball is easier to see on a gre en or blue table than it is on a gray table. Stars on the ball indicate the quality of the ball. Three stars indicate that it is of the highest quality, and is used in official competition. Although the official restrictions only focus on the flatness and rigidness of the blade itself, these dimensions are optimal for most play styles. Table tennis regulations allow different surfaces on each side of the racket.Various types of surfaces provide various levels of spin or speed, and in some cases they nullify spin. For example, a player may have a rubber that provides much spin on one side of his racket, and one that provides no spin on the other. By flipping the racket in play, different types of returns are possible. To help a player distinguish between th e rubber used by his opposing player, international rules specify that one side must be red while the other side must be black. The player has the right to inspect his opponent's racket before a match to see the type of rubber used and what color it is.Despite high speed play and rapid exchanges, a player can see clearly what side of the racket was used to hit the ball. Current rules state that, unless damaged in play, the racket cannot be exchanged for another racket at any time during a match. The server first stands with the ball held on the open palm of the hand not carrying the racket, called the freehand, and tosses the ball directly upward without spin, at least 16 centimeters (approximately 6 inches) high.The server strikes the ball with the racket on the ball's descent so that it touches first his court and then touches directly the receiver's court without touching the net assembly. In casual games, many players do not toss the ball upward; however, this is technically illegal and can give the serving player an unfair advantage. The ball must remain behind the endline and above the upper surface of the table, known as the playing surface, at all times during the service. The server cannot use his body or cloth ing to obstruct sight of the ball; the opponent and the umpire must have a clear view of the ball at all times.If the umpire is doubtful of the legality of a service they may first interrupt play and give a warning to the server. If the serve is a clear failure or is doubted again by the umpire after the warning, receiver scores a point. If the service is â€Å"good†, then the receiver must make a â€Å"good† return by hitting the ball back before it bounces a second time on receiver's side of the table so that the ball passes the net and touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly.Thereafter, the server and receiver must alternately make a return until the rally is over. Returning the serve is one of the most difficult parts of the game, as the server's first move is often the least predictable and thus most advantageous shot due to the numerous spin and speed choices at his or her disposal. The opponent's free hand touches the playing surface. As a receiver under the expedite system, completing 13 returns in a rally. In each game of a doubles match, the pair having the right to serve first shall choose which of them will do so. The receiving pair, however, can only choose in the first game of the match. When the first server is chosen in the second or the latter games of the match, the first receiver of the game is the player who served to the first server of the game in the preceding game.For example, if the order of play is A > X > B > Y at beginning of the first game, the order begins with X > A > Y > B or Y > B > X > A in the second game depending on either X or Y being chosen as the first server of the game. When a pair reaches 5 points in the final game, the pairs must switch ends of the table and the team that receives the service must switch receiver. For example, when the last order of play before a pair score 5 points in the final game is A > X > B > Y, the order after change shall be A > Y > B > X if A still has the second serve.Otherwise, X is the next server and the order becomes X > A > Y > B. Singles and doubles are both played in international competition, including the Olympic Games since 1988 and the Commonwealth Games since 2002. In 2005, the ITTF announced that doubles table tennis only was featured as a part of team events in the 2008 Olympics. Expedite system If a game is unfinished after 10 minutes' play and fewer than 18 points have been scored, the expedite system is initiated.
